I would say to him/her to cut it shorter on the sides and let the hair on top be longer so that you can spike it up a bit. Definitely bring the picture with you so that the barber can get an exact idea, it's better than relying on your explanation alone.Explain this type of hair-style for men?
I would say it is not so short messy look.
What I would do is print the picture and give it to the stylist to see for herself.
